Mesa County Oral History Meeting: A Bison Tale: Prehistoric Bison Hunting in Western Colorado

Mesa County Oral History Meeting: A Bison Tale: Prehistoric Bison Hunting in Western Colorado In-Person

Archaeological investigations performed by Dominguez Archaeological Research Group (DARG) are evolving into a fascinating story of the complex relationship of bison and humans in Western Colorado. The Western Colorado Bison Project, a grant activity funded by History Colorado State Historical Fund and carried out by DARG, has produced unprecedented information on where, how, and by whom bison were hunted west of the Continental Divide in Colorado. Recent excavations and research by Grand River Institute and Dominguez Archaeological Research Group have resulted in the recovery of over 500 specimens including culturally modified bison bones, bone tools, and associated projectile points and other items. Dates from these artifacts span a period from 11,700 years ago to the late 1800s. The presentation will include discussion of known and recent discoveries, and explore how the collected data has expanded our knowledge base of human/bison interaction in western Colorado. An interactive display of bison skulls, bones, furs, artifacts and research tools will also include a microscope you can use to examine a culturally modified bison bone. This presentation is designed to especially welcome children and teens as DARG is dedicated to encouraging our youth to participate in STEM activities.
