Join archaeologist H. “Sonny” Shelton as she takes you on a journey to explore the origins of the horse in western Colorado, including fossils found in the Grand Valley, buried faunal remains, and the remarkable story the horse as preserved in the Native American rock art of western Colorado.

Mesa County Oral History Meetings happen from 12pm to 1pm on the third Thursday of the month in the Central Library Community room in partnership with the Mesa County Historical Society.

Holly “Sonny” Shelton is an archaeologist, faunal analysis specialist, and field crew member for Grand River Institute and is a Dominguez Archaeological Research Group (DARG) associate. Shelton has worked for over 30 years as an archaeologist in Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, and Utah. She has also been privileged to serve the public as a Registered Nurse in western Colorado.


Dominquez Archaeological Research Group (DARG) archaeologists are actively working to document and record horse related rock art in western Colorado. These rare pictograph and petroglyph images depict the horse as it was experienced by the Indigenous peoples who used, cared for, and valued them.
