Mesa County Oral History Meeting: At a Crossroads: Remote Sensing in Local Archaeology and History In-Person

Lidar is featured in popular publications like National Geographic as the cutting-edge tool leading academics use to discover and map major archaeological sites, like ancient Mayan cities. But, as remote sensing data covers greater areas, becomes more accessible, and grows easier to work with, it also offers new, powerful tools for archaeologists and historians working on the local level. Through the analysis of combined data sets, such as bare-earth lidar digital elevation models, NAIP imagery, historic photos, and historic maps, CRM and land management agency archaeologists can record archaeological and historic features and landscapes in unprecedented detail and accuracy. We will examine how these kinds of data are changing our ability to understand the prehistoric and historic Southwest with some examples from northwest New Mexico and look at its potential for the Grand Valley. We will also discuss how such technology forces us to rethink our paradigms and priorities for how we identify and manage cultural resources.
